Custom Orthotics, 3D Scans, & When to Get New Inserts

Custom orthotic inserts can be a game-changer for foot pain, providing targeted support, improving alignment, and enhancing overall comfort. But like any medical device, orthotics don't last forever. Knowing when to replace them is crucial. At Caring Podiatry, we want you prepared for both short-term problems and long-term concerns, so we’ve put together a brief blog on replacing orthotics below, with some added info on how 3D scanning helps!

How to Know When You Need a Replacement Pair

Even the best custom orthotics wear down over time. Here are some key signs it's time for a replacement:

  1. Visible Wear and Tear:

    • Inspect your orthotics regularly for cracks, thinning, or significant wear on the top cover or shell.

    • If the material is compressed or no longer provides adequate cushioning, it's time for a new pair.

  2. Return of Pain or New Pain:

  3. Changes in Activity Level:

    • If you've significantly increased or decreased your activity level, your orthotics may need to be adjusted or replaced.

    • For example, if you've started training for a marathon, your orthotics may need to provide additional support and cushioning.

  4. Time-Based Replacement:

    • Depending on the materials used and your activity level, custom orthotics typically last anywhere from 1 to 5 years. Even if they look okay, the materials can lose their supportive properties over time.

    • General Guideline: We recommend having your orthotics evaluated by a podiatrist, particularly if new blisters are forming.

The Digital Difference

Gone are the days of messy plaster casts! We use a digital scanner to create a highly accurate 3D model of your feet, capturing the exact contours to ensure a perfect fit. Models can also be sent to the lab instantly, speeding up the fabrication process.
